In which Mr Butler pursues legal counsel and makes a covert attempt to visit a prisoner within Edinburgh’s ancient Tolbooth, only to find the city aflame with the tumult of a swelling mob intent on obtaining justice by their own means. The insurgents, with martial precision and grim purpose, seize city gates, disarm the guard, and set to battering the prison door amidst a thunderous tumult, while the magistrates’ authority falters and the city braces for a dire reckoning.
