The Heartache Of MaterialismBible Reading: Genesis 49:20; Mark 10:17-31Summary: Jacob’s blessing for his son Asher was materialprosperity, a fertile land that would provide luxurious food,like oil, which would be fit for kings. The blessing focuses onwealth and a high quality of life. But there was a danger inthis blessing; material prosperity can lead to your downfall, aswe see in the history of Asher. Later in Mark 10, Jesusinstructed a young man to sacrifice for the sake of Christ andhis neighbour, identifying his love for money as the last thingthat bound him to this world. His money was his idol andwhat stood between him and eternal life. He must repentfrom this world and its things, deny himself, seek Christ indeeds and life and follow Him in all obedience.
