Jesus insisted: Allow it now, for thus it is fitting to fulfill all righteousness.He stepped into the water not because he had sins to wash but because he came to stand where sinners stand. He would not save us from a distance.After Jesus was baptized, he came up from the water and the heavens were opened. The Spirit of God descended like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.Before Jesus preached a sermon. Before he healed anyone. Before he called a disciple. Before he did anything to earn approval, the Father declared his pleasure. The affirmation came before the ministry. The identity was established before the work began.We spend our lives trying to earn the words we think we need. Jesus received them first. Everything he did flowed from that identity rather than toward it.Those words are spoken over you too. In your baptism, the same Spirit descended. The same Father spoke. You are not working toward becoming beloved.
