He strongly urges Dollar to withdraw his request, citing the emotional burden on the community and Henderson's widow.Despite the mayor's protests, Sheriff Holton is deputized to conduct the inquest, scheduled for the very next morning. Dollar grows suspicious about why the mayor is working so hard to prevent the investigation and wonders who might have asked him to intervene. At the hastily arranged inquest, witnesses including a doctor, hotel staff, and a chambermaid testify about Henderson's final hours. The chambermaid's testimony reveals that Mrs. Henderson was seen in the hotel lobby shortly before her husband's fatal fall from the window.
