The Heron at Drowning Creek

from Hollow Country — Fexingo Horror · host Fexingo

October 2017. Luna pulls off Black Mountain Road at 2 a.m. because something in the ditch catches her taillights. A woman in a mud-stained dress stands perfectly still beside a flooded culvert, watching the water. Luna rolls down her window, and the woman says, 'He went under about an hour ago. The heron's been waiting ever since.' Luna gets out. She walks to the edge. The water is black and moving fast, and there is a great blue heron standing in the shallows, completely motionless, staring at the same spot where the woman is staring. The woman's name is Irene. She says her husband walked into the creek with his waders on, full of rocks, and never came up. But his body isn't there. The heron is. And every night for the past twelve years, Irene has stood on this bank, waiting for the bird to leave. It never does. Luna stays until the fog lifts, listening to the story of a drowning that might not have been an accident, and a bird that might not be a bird. When she finally drives away, she checks her rearview mirror. The heron is standing in the middle of the road. Staring after her. #FexingoHorror #HorrorPodcast #HollowCountry #DrowningCreek #BlackMountainRoad #greatblueheron #Irene #culvert #waders #fog #October #midnight #grief #vigil #supernatural #southernGothic #AppalachianHorror #Luna Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
