From the earliest times to the present, alcohol has played an important role in religion. Historically, alcoholic beverages have served as sources of needed nutrients. They have been widely used for their medicinal and antiseptic  properties. The role of such beverages as thirst quenchers is obvious. They also play an important role in increasing the enjoyment of life. They can be a social lubricant, promote relaxation, and can provide pharmacological pleasure. And, of course, increase the pleasure of eating.
