The Hollow at Gallows Pond

In October of 2004, I spent a long weekend at a friend's family cabin near Gallows Pond, a dark, weedy stretch of water outside the town of Raven's Mill. The cabin was old, the kind of place where every floorboard groaned and the cellar door was kept padlocked. On the second night, a woman came walking up the gravel drive—dressed in a white nightgown, barefoot, her hair plastered to her face. She said she lived across the pond. She said her name was Anna. And she asked me to come see the thing that was living in her basement. By the end of the night, I learned why no one in Raven's Mill ever talked about Gallows Pond, and why the old maps left a blank space where the cabins should have been. This is what I saw.
