The Holocaust: Not a Thing of the Past for Victims and Their Families

On the occasion of Holocaust Remembrance Day, it is important that people remember that the Holocaust is not just a horrid historical event from the past, but something that is still very much 'present' for victims and their families. Today's guests exemplify this presence. Leonia Kallir Kurgan is a Holocaust survivor who, at 4 years old, barely escaped from Poland, as the Nazis searched for and murdered the Jews. In her book, A Crowd of One, she has written about how her family managed to escape the concentration camps and their inability to escape the scars of the Holocaust. Susan Edel is a volunteer with the Tracing Department of Magen David Adom, the Israeli Red Cross. This is a special service that researches lost relatives all over the globe and tries to reunite families who have been broken apart because of the Holocaust. We catch up with her in Geneva, Switzerland, where she is researching family members at the library of the International Committee of the Red Cross.
