The Holy Spirit Glorifying Christ

from Daily Sermon Station · host Daily Sermon Station

Spurgeon opens with a double warning about the two opposite errors by which the church mistreats the Holy Spirit — claiming fresh revelations and inner lights beyond Scripture on one side, and forgetting the Spirit's personhood and work almost entirely on the other — before settling on the text's single test: the Spirit's one identifiable mark is that he always glorifies Christ, never himself, never doctrine for its own sake, never mere experience, never ritual or morality, but always and only the person, blood, and righteousness of Jesus. He then applies this test like a scalpel to four areas: ministers (whose preaching is Spirit-given only if Christ is its center, not Calvinism, not liturgy, not moral advice, not polished essays), doctrines (condemning any teaching that strips Christ of his divinity, his faithfulness, or his saving power — whether Socinianism denying his deity or Arminianism implying his promises can fail), the sinner's convictions (distinguishing the Spirit's work of genuine humility and childlike trust from Satan's counterfeits of despair, self-made readiness, and hellish terrors), and the believer's own experience (insisting that only what leads out of self and into Christ is truly Christian experience, however real the rest may be). He closes with two practical applications — first, that the church's absolute dependence on the Spirit should drive it to constant prayer, diligent use of every season of revival while it lasts, and refusal to turn God's working into a public curiosity; and second, a direct gospel appeal to the worst sinners in the hall, arguing that a Spirit who glorifies Christ must glorify his uttermost saving power, and inviting every trembling, self-condemning soul to simply believe and find that Christ is willing, able, and already looking for them.Sermon delivered by Charles Spurgeon on August 17, 1862.
