"The Holy Spirit" (John 14:15-21 & 16:7-11)

from RUF at UNCW · host Reformed University Fellowship at UNCW

We’re moving from the work of God the Father and God the Son— who plan and accomplish redemption (respectively), to the work of God the Spirit, who applies that redemption to God’s people.  In this passage from John we hear Jesus talk about his own project of redemption. Why Jesus is confident that his plans for redemption will not fail? He is confident not because of anything in us, because he knows what kind of Helper we have. (*This sermon contains a reading from the excellent children's book "HE PIRATE WHO TRIED TO CAPTURE THE MOON by Dennis Haseley) QUOTES: “What are we are for in the first place? The fundamental answer…is that what we’re “here for” is to become genuine human beings, reflecting the God in whose image we’re made, and doing so in worship on the one hand and in mission, in its full and large sense, on the other; and that we do this not least by “following Jesus.” The way this works out is that it produces, through the work of the Holy Spirit, a transformation of character.”— N.T. Wright “Every time we say, "I believe in the Holy Spirit," we mean that we believe there is a living God able and willing to enter human personality and change it.”— J.B. Phillips DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: John Stott said, “without the Holy Spirit, Christian discipleship would be impossible.” Do you agree or disagree? Why or why not?  Compare John 3:3-8, and Romans 8:9-11. How does someone get new life in Jesus? Can someone have forgiveness through Jesus but not “have” the Spirit?  Read John 14:15-21. What does Jesus say are some of the results of being “in” God through the Spirit? (See also Ephesians 1:13-14).  Read John 16:7-11. What are all the things the Spirit does? How does this take a burden off your shoulders?  Read John 14:18 How is feeling like “an orphan” the opposite of a life of faith?  Read John 14:15 & Romans 5:5. Where does obedience come from? Where does love for Jesus come from? How do these truths change the way you approach growth in holiness?
