In which the lofty and irascible Master Jacques Coppenole, a hosier from Ghent, boldly asserts his humble dignity amidst the ceremonious splendour of the cardinal’s court, to the mingled amusement and consternation of all assembled. Meanwhile, the hapless poet Gringoire struggles in vain to command the attention of a restless crowd, whose eyes and ears are captivated by the colourful Flemish envoys and their uproarious jests rather than his solemn and allegorical mystery play.
