The Immortal Demon Monk: The Legend of Rasputin
from Matter of Fact: A play on "matter" (physics) and "facts" (news). · host Larry White
Grigori Rasputin was a Siberian peasant and self-proclaimed holy man who rose to the pinnacle of power in the Russian court by convincing Tsar Nicholas II and Empress Alexandra that he could heal their hemophiliac son, Alexei. Despite his influence, he became infamous for his scandalous debauchery and political interference, earning the title of "mad monk" and fueling the public resentment that accelerated the Romanov dynasty's decline. His dramatic life ended in 1916 when a group of nobles assassinated him through a sequence of poisoning, shooting, and drowning, an event followed shortly by the fall of the Russian monarchy as he had prophesied.
