God is IMMUTABLE Malachi 3:6 (ESV) — 6 “For I the Lord do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed. 1. Define Immutability i. Im- ii. Mut- iii. Able- A. Immutable in Essence Exodus 3:13–14 (ESV) — 13 Then Moses said to God, “If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what shall I say to them?” 14 God said to Moses, “I am who I am.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I am has sent me to you.’ ” Psalm 102:24–28 (ESV) — 24 “O my God,” I say, “take me not away in the midst of my days— you whose years endure throughout all generations!” 25 Of old you laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. 26 They will perish, but you will remain; they will all wear out like a garment. You will change them like a robe, and they will pass away, 27 but you are the same, and your years have no end. 28 The children of your servants shall dwell secure; their offspring shall be established before you. B. Immutable in Perfections James 1:17 (ESV) — 17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. C. Immutable in Will Numbers 23:19 (ESV) — 19 God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it? Isaiah 46:9–10 (ESV) — 9 remember the former things of old; for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me, 10 declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose,’ 2. Objections to Immutability 1 Samuel 15:11 (ESV) — 11 The Lord said, “I regret that I have made Saul king, for he has turned back from following me and has not performed my commandments.” And Samuel was angry, and he cried to the Lordall night. 1 Samuel 15:35 (ESV) — 35 And Samuel did not see Saul again until the day of his death, but Samuel grieved over Saul. And the Lordregretted that he had made Saul king over Israel. 1 Samuel 15:28–29 (ESV) — 28 And Samuel said to him, “The Lordhas torn the kingdom of Israel from you this day and has given it to a neighbor of yours, who is better than you. 29 And also the Glory of Israel will not lie or have regret, for he is not a man, that he should have regret.” 3. What difference does IMMUTABILTY make for us A. God’s Immutability is a Warning B. God’s Immutability is a Comfort C. God’s Immutability is Praise Worthy Application: 1.
