The Intimacy Gap_ Understanding the Sexless Relationship

from Conspiracy Theories Exploring The Unseen · host Michael Fortune

When we talk about a sexless relationship, the clinical definition is fairly clear: having sex ten or fewer times per year. But if you look at the research, the number itself actually matters much less than the emotional impact it has on the people involved. Think of it less like a quota you need to meet and more like a barometer for how you and your partner are connecting. We are seeing a real trend toward lower frequency in the United States, with the average for married couples dropping from seventy-three times a year back in 1990 down to about fifty-four today. Roughly fifteen to twenty percent of married couples now fall into that category of a sexless marriage. But why is this happening? It is rarely just one thing. Sixty-seven percent of the time, the issue is a mismatch in libido. One partner may want more intimacy while the other is perfectly content with less, creating a gap that leads to feelings of loneliness or rejection.
