The Inversion of Prophecy

from Rabbit Holes & Meditations - Christian Bible Study · host gregenewell

Jesus said I have told you these things now so that when they happen, you will remember and believe. He did not say I'm telling you these things as a warning so that you can predict the next thing in the news cycle. Have we flipped prophecy on its face and reversed its meaning?  I think it's worth reflecting for a second on current world events and prophecy, but not the way you might think. To many people from the pulpit have inverted prophecy like the tail wagging the dog - using world events to validate their own claims and opinions about scripture.  I had just finished my study of John 16:1-11, and it occurred to me how much of his words about Christian persecution rippled through history, not just with the disciples of the time. And further, how much of what Jesus said overlaps with Revelation? That led me into a study of the current world events and whether the end times are playing out. Of course, that's where my mind goes; it's hard to avoid. If you pay attention to any of the major religious people online, a large collection of them, and I would argue the ones that are getting the most amount of viewership, are connecting world events to biblical prophecy. As I found myself winding my way into this discussion, the words of Jesus came echoing back. You will hear of wars and rumors of wars but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. And I finally ended up on Paul's message to the Thessalonians. I think we need to heed these messages as we watch what is happening on the world stage because, as Jesus said, "The time is not yet."
