It was briefly listed on the Sentry Risk Table with a 1-in-430 chance of impact in 2026, but highly precise radar observations eventually ruled out any threat.Lessons from History: Chelyabinsk and TunguskaHistorical events highlight the destructive power of even relatively small objects:• The Chelyabinsk Event (2013): A ~20-meter asteroid entered the atmosphere over Russia, exploding with the energy of 400–500 kilotons of TNT. The resulting blast wave damaged over 4,000 buildings and injured roughly 1,500 people, primarily due to shattered glass.• The Tunguska Event (1908): A larger object (50–60 meters) exploded over Siberia, flattening 2,150 km² of forest. Scientists estimate its energy yield was between 3 and 50 megatons. If such an event occurred over a metropolitan area, it would cause total destruction.The Challenge of Undetected AsteroidsNASA experts warn that there are approximately 25,000 "city-killer" asteroids (around 140 meters in size) in our vicinity, yet only 40% have been discovered. These objects are large enough to cause massive regional destruction but small enough to evade current detection systems until they are very close to Earth.
