The Invitation You Cannot Afford to Ignore

Send us Fan MailIn this homily, we reflect on Christ’s parable of the wedding feast and the invitation God continually extends to each of us.The King prepares a great banquet and invites His people to come, yet many refuse. Some are simply too preoccupied with the ordinary things of life, while others violently reject those who bring the invitation. In the same way, God calls us into communion with Him—but He does not force us to respond.How often does God invite us to prayer, to worship, to serve another person, to repent, or simply to spend time in His presence, only for us to decide that something else is more important?But accepting the invitation is only part of the Christian life. Christ’s parable ends with the mysterious image of the wedding garment. The Fathers speak of this garment as love and virtue, but we can also understand it as being “clothed with Christ.”The Christian life requires us daily to put off the old man—our selfishness, passions, and fallen desires—and to put on the new man in Christ. We are called not merely to enter the Church, but to be transformed by the grace of the Holy Spirit until we can say with St. Paul:“It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me.” — Galatians 2:20God is generous. He continues to seek us, call us, and invite us into communion with Him.
