The Journey Continues
from St Mark Sermons Hosted by St Mark Coptic Orthodox Church
This Sunday marks the beginning of the fifty-day feast leading to Pentecost. It is the Sunday of Thomas, but the sermon reframes him as "courageous Thomas," possibly the one brave enough to leave the room while the other disciples hid in fear. When Christ appeared to the fearful disciples, His first words were "Peace be with you," bringing comfort that dispelled their anxiety — a gift He continues to offer today. The homily then turns to the theme of the Church as Mother, quoting St. Cyprian: "No one can have God as a Father who does not have the Church as a Mother." Since this Sunday coincides with Mother's Day, Fr Thomas draws a parallel between the Church and mothers, both sources of nourishment, life, and sacrificial love, illustrating mothers' selfless, constant giving through stories and quotes. He reflects on the Virgin Mary as the ultimate model of patient, sacrificial motherhood, raising Christ with tenderness. The message closes by honoring all women — biological mothers and spiritual mother-figures alike — who embody unconditional love, unwavering hope, and steadfast faith, and challenges the congregation to let the Church function as this kind of nurturing mother for everyone.
