The Journey of a Progressive Christian Pastor with Stan Mitchell

from Beautiful Shifts · host Lindsay & Shantil

Stan grew up in a fundamental conservative Pentecostal religious community in Arkansas, was a teen minister, and became a highly influential Lead Pastor by the time he was an adult. Led by a desire to expand and make room for all, Stan went on the journey of becoming a progressive Christian Pastor and shares his fascinating story in this moving and thoughtful conversation today. We're honored Stan made the time to share his thoughts and experiences with us in this inspiring conversation that we will continue to reflect back on, gleaning insight and wisdom from, and are excited to share with our audience.    Stan currently serves as a Teaching Pastor at The Village Church in Atlanta, GA, and Austin New Church (UMC) in Austin, TX. He is the Pastor Emeritus of GracePoint Church in Nashville, TN, where he served as Lead Pastor from 2003 through 2019. In 2015, GracePoint made the move to the full affirmation and celebration of LGBTQ+ people. Stan now spends his vocational time as a speaker, LGBTQ+ advocate, and consultant within the Progressive Christian Movement, including within the LDS Community.    Find and follow Stan on Facebook here and on Instagram @pastorstanmitchell.    Stan will be speaking at the LUV Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah, this Friday, October 18. Wherever Life Takes Us whereverlifetakesuss Join three best friend as they explore this beautiful world! Half Ties kwamenabrace Half-ties is a conversation series on the funny, beautiful and sometimes challenging moments that interracial couples experience being with somebody who’s culturally different from them.Hosted by creative couple Olivia & Kwamena, we listen to stories about growing up with racism and prejudice; falling in love and meeting the in-laws; navigating difficult conversations within the family and in society, and how these couples make their relationship work and what they actively choose to pass down to the next generation. C.S. Lewis's The Last Battle St. Philip's Church: Charleston, SC Come join us on Wednesday nights as we explore the riches of C.S. Lewis’s marvelous book The Last Battle, which is the last of The Chronicles of Narnia. It is a remarkable book on multiple levels and was awarded the Carnegie Medal back in the 1950s when it was first published. The Last Battle has some themes in common with The Great Divorce and That Hideous Strength that will make it an excellent follow-up to those two books, and like them, it has some remarkable resonance with things going on in today’s culture. It is a book that is both theologically rich and poignantly beautiful in its writing, and it can help equip us to live boldly for Christ in a culture that has lost its way. (Although this book is the last of The Chronicles of Narnia, it can stand on its own and it is not necessary to have read the other books for this class.)
