The Journey to Becoming Mr. Universe | Doug Brignole
from 511 Media Group · host Doug Brignole, Mike Harvey, Tom Touchstone
HighlightsSo, Doug, you started competing again, started writing again. Have you found your love again for fitness? That's always a question. I always talk to the guys because you and I were young when we fell in love with fitness, I believe I tell people I enjoyed exercising in the process. It depends on the weight you're using, and it depends on the angle of that limb relative to gravity or relative to whatever other direction of resistance you might be using based on either a cable or based on what's called friction force, which is if you push in a direction other than opposite resistance. So one of the people that I sent the book the manuscript to was a guy named Wayne Westcott, PhD professor of Exercise science at Quincy College. He himself an author of 28 fitness books, very well respected.Just talking to the audience, a lot of the audience knows that we have Muscle Matters and we're going to dig deeper into Doug with his thought process, with his analytical thinking, with his technique, developing from an old school format when he was young to where he is now writing two books.I mean, I worked after the bodybuilding career was 16 years in the It business, so it was kind of a good career. But it was just like you said, that's crazy, Doug. What this episode covers
Doug Brignole was interviewed for Lunch Break and Muscle Matters on October 10th and sadly passed away on October 13th due to COVID-19. Mike Harvey, Tom Touchstone, and Doug discuss the Iron Man magazine and Doug's impressive bodybuilding career. Doug's French surname is pronounced 'Brinol', but is commonly pronounced 'Brighnoli'. Doug worked in the fitness industry for 37 years, was Mr. California, Mr. America and Mr. Universe, aged 16-59. He was a former gym owner, author, lecturer, fitness, TV host, and personal trainer. The Iron Man magazine has been sold, and the new owners are aiming to turn it into a men's magazine with fashion, cars and boxing. Doug is a bodybuilding friend of the host's and he inspired the host to start exercising again by competing in Lonnie Tipper's show and winning the overall title. Doug has an impressive resume, certified by the American College of Sports Medicine and American Council of Exercise. He has also written two books to his credit, Million Dollar Muscle and The Physics of Resistance Exercise. The host also saw Doug perform an exercise using cables and was inspired to do it as well. The conversation ended with the host telling Mike he was squatting again because of Doug's simple exercise. Doug began weight training at the age of 14, in order to gain muscle weight. He started with a plastic cement filled barbell set, and progressed to the local health club, which was actually Bill Pearl's gym. Doug didn't know who Bill Pearl was at the time, but he could see that the bodybuilders were using more advanced equipment, such as cable and leg extension machines. He was inspired by their progress and continued to lift weights, eventually becoming a competitive athlete and gym owner. 14 year old Chris Pearl was determined to work out at a local gym owned by a Mr. Pearl, a Mr. Universe winner. When he asked for membership, Mr. Pearl said he couldn't join until he was 15, but Chris returned a year later. Mr. Pearl said he would need to pay $185, which Chris couldn't afford. Chris offered to do janitorial work in exchange for membership, to which Mr. Pearl agreed. Every Saturday, Chris would help Mr. Pearl with chores and Mr. Pearl would pay him, allowing Chris to earn his week's membership in advance. This arrangement allowed Chris to work out at the gym despite not having the money to pay for the membership.
