The Journey to the Cross - Week 6

from Eastview Baptist Church Teaching Podcast · host Eastview Baptist Church

"The Journey to the Cross: Jesus' Mission of Love and Lordship" Week 44 (1/5/25)          Text: Mark 11:12-26          Title: "Faith That Moves Mountains"Big Idea: True faith in God transforms our lives, uproots obstacles, and bears fruit that glorifies Him.Points: Faithless Religion Produces Fruitless Lives (vv. 12-14) – Fruitlessness is judged. Faith That Cleanses the Temple of Our Hearts (vv. 15-19) – True worship is God-centered, not self-centered. Faith That Speaks to the Mountains (vv. 20-24) – Faith moves mountains and forgives others. Faith Forgives and Frees (vv25-26) – Genuine faith frees the bondage of sin and shame. Connection to Text: In Mark 11, Jesus confronts lifeless religion, fruitless faith, and the power of belief to overcome impossibilities. Thesis: Faith that moves mountains starts with roots in God’s power, a heart that bears fruit, and an unshakable belief in His promises.   1. Faithless Religion Produces Fruitless Lives (Mark 11:12-14) The Scene: Jesus curses a fig tree that appears healthy but has no fruit. Key Insight: The fig tree symbolizes Israel’s lifeless religion—outward appearances without spiritual substance.                   Application:                   •               Are we “fig trees” with leaves (outward signs of faith) but no fruit (love, joy, service)?                   •               God desires transformation, not performance. Cross-Reference: John 15:5 – “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”   2. Faith That Cleanses the Temple of Our Hearts (Mark 11:15-19) The Scene: Jesus clears the temple, rebuking those who turned God’s house into a marketplace. Key Insight: Faith isn’t a transaction; it’s about reverence and relationship.                   Application:                   •               What tables in your life need overturning? Pride? Greed? Distraction?                   •               True faith invites Jesus to cleanse and center our hearts. Cross-Reference: Psalm 51:10 – “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.”   3. Faith That Speaks to the Mountains (Mark 11:20-24) The Scene: Jesus teaches the disciples about faith that moves mountains. Key Insight: Faith is the assurance of God’s power, not our performance.                   Application:                   •               Speak to the “mountains” in your life—doubt, fear, sin—and believe in God’s ability to remove them.                   •               Trust that God’s timing and plan are perfect. Cross-Reference: Hebrews 11:1 – “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”   4. Faith Forgives and Frees (Mark 11:25-26) The Scene: Jesus ties faith to forgiveness, urging His followers to release bitterness. Key Insight: Unforgiveness hinders faith; it’s a mountain in the way of spiritual growth.                   Application:                   •               Who do you need to forgive? Where is resentment holding you back?                   •               Faith opens the door to freedom by letting go of past hurts. Cross-Reference: Matthew 6:14-15 – “For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.”   Memorization Verse Mark 11:24   Conclusion Recap: Faith in God bears fruit, cleanses the heart, moves mountains, and forgives. Challenge: What step of faith is God calling you to take today? • Trust Him for fruitfulness. •  Let Him clear your heart’s temple. •  Speak to your mountains.                          •  Forgive freely.   Gospel Realization The ultimate mountain Jesus moved was the cross. By His sacrifice, He removed the mountain of sin and death, offering eternal life to all who believe. Today, Jesus invites you to place your faith in Him and watch the mountains in your life crumble under His power.
