The joy of the Lord is your strength
from Daily Picture · host Stephanie Hawkins
Today I saw a dusty diary in my mind's eye which reminded me of Jewish leader, Nehemiah, leading the exiled people of Israel, back to Jerusalem to physically rebuild the city's walls which in turn encouraged them to want to restore their spiritual connection with God. They had lost all connection because God's written Word in the Torah, the first 5 books of the bible, had been completely forgotten and ignored whilst they were in exile in Babylon. The people requested to hear God's Word as read by respected Priest and teacher, Ezra, from dawn to noon. (See Nehemiah 8:1-3). They listened intently, sincerely repented but felt distraught at how far they had wandered from God's Law. However, Nehemiah, knowing the love and forgiveness of God, said to them, "...Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength" (Nehemiah 8:10). This message is for us too. If you return to God, having completely gone the opposite direction, He is there waiting for you with open arms. (There is no coincidence in Jesus's arms being outstretched on the cross.) Rejoice in your restored relationship with God. Fellowship with others in His Kingdom, to share His Word and be encouraged.
