The Joyful Mysteries
from Say The Rosary
The Joyful Mysteries of the Holy Rosary are five events from the early life of Jesus Christ, traditionally prayed on Mondays and Saturdays. They focus on the Incarnation and Jesus's childhood: The Annunciation — The Archangel Gabriel appears to the Virgin Mary, announcing that she will conceive and bear the Son of God. Her response, "Let it be done to me according to your word," represents her freely given consent (Luke 1:26–38). The Visitation — Mary travels to visit her relative Elizabeth, who is pregnant with John the Baptist. Upon hearing Mary's greeting, Elizabeth's baby leaps in her womb, and Elizabeth calls Mary "blessed among women." Mary responds with the Magnificat (Luke 1:39–56). The Nativity — Jesus is born in Bethlehem. Because there was no room at the inn, Mary and Joseph place the newborn Jesus in a manger. Shepherds come to adore him after angels announce his birth (Luke 2:1–20). The Presentation in the Temple — Following Jewish law, Mary and Joseph bring the infant Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem to present him to God. There they encounter Simeon, who had been promised he would not die before seeing the Messiah, and he prophesies about Jesus and Mary's future suffering (Luke 2:22–38). The Finding of Jesus in the Temple — At age twelve, Jesus goes missing during a Passover pilgrimage to Jerusalem. After three days of anxious searching, Mary and Joseph find him in the Temple, sitting among the teachers, listening and asking questions. Jesus responds that he must be "about his Father's business" (Luke 2:41–52).
