The Jukebox: July 10, 1999

from The Jukebox: Radio Archive · host Mike Saffran

“The All-Request Rock ’n’ Roll Jukebox,” hosted by Mike Saffran, on “99 BBF”/WBBF-FM (98.9), Rochester, N.Y. Originally aired 7 p.m.–Midnight July 10, 1999. Special note: As most listeners, I’m sure, could sense, I always had a blast hosting “The Jukebox,” taking their calls and talking to them on the phone, and then playing requests on the radio! But every so often, a particular show stands out as my having an especially good time. I can tell, listening back, that this was one of those nights! :-) Callers aired and other show highlights: 00:14 Reference to fellow 99 BBF DJ Tom Noonan (Note: I’m guessing this might be in relation to his show, prior to mine, possibly having been pre-recorded) 01:08 First of multiple references to show-sponsor Shepard Ford (Canandaigua) 01:14 Greg/Someplace near Rochester (“[Sittin’ On] The Dock Of The Bay”) 01:50 Sarah/Babysitting in Rochester (“Great Balls Of Fire”) 02:40 “I’m looking for Ford Ranger pickup trucks … so maybe I can swing a deal over at Shepard Ford — bringing you ‘The Jukebox’ tonight!” (Note: We might call this a “value-added” show-sponsorship mention! ;-) 03:04 Reference to “sister station” WBEE-FM DJ “Big Daddy” Dave Beck — with thanks to him for supplying me with a current weather forecast, 30 seconds before realizing I didn’t have one and the weather jingle was about to start! (I have no doubt this was a true story!) 03:42 Gary/Canandaigua (“Keep On Dancing” — dedication to Tom and Rita) 04:07 “Boy, could I go for a Genny now!” ;-) 04:14 Cliff/Buffalo (“Sugar Shack” — dedicated to “all the pretty girls of Rochester way!”) 04:55 Reference to Archie Bell & The Drells – “Tighten Up” being used on a TV commercial for car insurance 05:05 Reference to Don McLean – “American Pie” being the “most requested oldie of all time, probably, here on 99 BBF!” 05:14 “Kid Fest Summer Blast” reference 05:43 Kathy (“Bye Bye Love”) 05:46 Caller: “Got a [Seeburg] jukebox in my dining room” Host: “A woman after my own heart here!… I was thinking of getting a jukebox tattoo — boy, that would be dedication to this show, wouldn’t it?!… Or should I just get a jukebox for my dining room, too, like you got? That’s a little less permanent, just in case I change my mind … or in case somebody up here, at 99 BBF, changes their mind about me!… ‘The Jukebox’ will always live in my heart!” :-) 06:30 “More great oldies than RG&E has watts!… I’ve got more great oldies than Lollypop Farm has cats and dogs!… More great oldies than Abbott’s has custard!… than Bausch & Lomb had sunglasses!… than Bruegger’s has bagels!… cars on 490!” :-) 07:18 “More great oldies than the Democrat and Chronicle has paragraphs!” 07:37 “More great oldies than Durand Eastman has beach bums!” 07:47 Christopher/Rochester (“Beep Beep”) (Note: Phone call includes a rare reference to the song’s lyrics about a road race between the drivers of a Nash Rambler and a Cadillac; more: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beep_Beep_(song)) 08:56 Jamie/Henrietta (“Hawaii Five-O”) 09:35 Reference to U.S. women’s national soccer team, which won the 1999 FIFA Women's World Cup (June 19–July 10, 1999) earlier the same day — and to it being “a bit of a pony-tail fest going on there!” :-) (more: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1999_FIFA_Women%27s_World_Cup) 10:00 Bob/Irondequoit (“Sherry”) (Caller: “Not much [happening].” Host: “Typical night in Irondequoit then!” ;-) 10:30 Rick/Rochester (“Girl Watcher” — dedicated to “the ladies on ‘The Avenue’ (Monroe Avenue)” — especially those working at Wilson Farms and 7-Eleven, who had “The Jukebox” playing!) 11:20 Another reference to “sister station” WBEE-FM DJ “Big Daddy” Dave Beck (out in the hallway ;-) 11:49 “Matchmaker Oldies Party” (with 99 BBF’s Mike Vickers) at Maxwell’s (Irondequoit bar) reference 12:29 Barbara (with husband, Buddy, baby, and dog, Johnson — barking in the background!) (“Shimmy, Shimmy, Ko-Ko-Bop”) 13:25 Diane/Greece (“Spooky”) 14:35 Silver Lake Drive-In (Perry) reference 14:47 Chuck/Working at Dollar Tree (The Marketplace) (“Judy In Disguise [With Glasses]”) 15:45 WBBF-AM (950) and WAXC-AM (1460) references 16:01 Sabrina/Spencerport (“Chantilly Lace”) (“Singin’ about pony tails!” :-) 16:49 “Old Fashion Day,” Sunday, at Finger Lakes Racetrack reference 17:18 Gail/Livonia (“Jailhouse Rock”) 17:44 Unidentified male/ Greece (“Blue Suede Shoes”) 18:16 Top of the World (Genesee County) reference 18:51 Unidentified male/Greece (“Eight Days A Week” — dedication to wife, Linda, on her 34th birthday) 19:32 Patty/Pavilion (“More Today Than Yesterday”) 20:27 Tail end of a top-of-the-hour station ID is heard (my guess: I likely knew the cassette-tape side was nearing its end — so, I decided to run out the tape) 20:46 “If I say that maybe three or four times, think maybe I can get a 2000 Ranger at invoice?!” ;-) 21:03 Naomi and Jen/Top of the World (Genesee County) (“Do You Love Me”) 22:58 Jerry (“Give Me One More Chance”) 23:35 Julie/Driving someplace on the State Thruway (“Splish Splash”) 24:01 “I’ve been getting a lot of calls from Julies, it seems … so, I’m thinking we gotta get on ‘Julie, Do Ya Love Me,’ too, pretty soon from ‘The Jukebox’!” (reference to song by Bobby Sherman) 24:53 Brent/Brighton (“Mustang Sally”) 25:17 Erica (with Jessica — on a 3-way phone call)/Hamlin (“Sweet Pea”) 26:14 Michael/Perinton (“Cherish”) 26:39 Rick/Clifton Springs (“Knock Three Times”) 27:13 Aaron/Driving someplace (“Sugar, Sugar” — dedication to future wife, Julie) 27:38 “Tripping over my own shoe laces here … why to they make them so long, anyway?” 28:27 Unidentified male/Greece (“Surfin’ U.S.A.”) All content (radio aircheck, audio podcast – all components, and show notes): © Michael J.
