The Jukebox: Oct. 1, 1994

from The Jukebox: Radio Archive · host Mike Saffran

“Jukebox Saturday Night,” hosted by Mike Saffran, on “Oldies 98.9”/WKLX-FM (98.9), Rochester, N.Y. Originally aired 7 p.m.–Midnight Oct. 1, 1994.Special notes: This show, once again, began with “’70s at 7” (7–8 p.m.) and ended with “Backseat Memories” (11 p.m.–midnight). Interestingly, although I was still around three months away from assuming the role of permanent host, I made no on-air references, as I typically would, to filling in for Nick Evans (aka “Nick at Night”) — which leads me to speculate, today, if Nick, by then, already had been easing out of the role (because he worked full-time in sales and, as I recall, had been looking to relinquish his on-air role). Also, even though clearly I was still using a reel-to-reel tape deck for playback of most phone calls, I wonder if VoxPro had been installed and I was transitioning over to occasionally using it (because I notice a few instances when the phone calls do not, to me, sound like they were played back from the reel-to-reel deck; although I later fell in love with VoxPro for taking and editing listener phone calls, I recall easing into using it due to initial unfamiliarity). An especially fun aspect of this particular aircheck: Some full station imaging was captured in the recording!Callers aired and other show highlights:00:11 Unidentified female (“Gypsy Woman”)00:21 Full WKLX “’70s at 7” jingle00:30 Unidentified male (“Frankenstein”)00:45 Unidentified male (“Hot Rod Lincoln”)01:23 Unidentified male (“We’ve Got To Get It On Again”) 01:34 Unidentified female (“Put Your Hand In The Hand”)02:22 “Lakefield In the Morning” (weekday morning show) and Original Bagel Bakeries (Irondequoit and Penfield) contest plug02:48 Unidentified female (“Green-Eyed Lady”)03:21 Unidentified female (“Paint It Black”)04:10 Unidentified male (“Hooked On A Feeling”)04:47 Rianne (“Paperback Writer” — dedication to Christina)05:19 “Keeping The ’70s Alive” with Bob Shannon, Disc Go Round (Elm Ridge Center, Greece) and Eastway Nissan (Webster) (sponsors) references05:36 Full WKLX – Mike Saffran personalized imaging sweeper05:53 Unidentified female (“Crocodile Rock”)06:27 Lisa/Irondequoit (“Chapel Of Love” — dedication to Elizabeth and Derrick)07:26 Unidentified female (“Leader Of The Pack”)08:05 Unidentified male (“A Whiter Shade Of Pale”)08:50  “Beatle Brunch” with Joe Johnson and “Beatlerama ’94” (sponsor) references (more: https://buffalonews.com/news/article_8b899002-3e39-5b0d-b7e7-e108516be31c.html)09:01 Full WKLX – Mike Saffran personalized imaging sweeper09:14 Unidentified female (“Brown Eyed Girl”)09:38 Unidentified female (“La Bamba” — dedication to sister Gina and friend Jackie)10:03 Nicole/Bergen (“Crimson And Clover”)10:59 Unidentified female (“Louie, Louie”)12:03 Andrea/Rochester (“Do You Want To Know A Secret” — dedication to Mary)12:39 Unidentified female (“My Girl”)13:04 “Lakefield In the Morning” (weekday morning show) plug13:16 Full WKLX – Mike Saffran personalized imaging sweeper13:40 Unidentified male (“Bottle Of Wine”)13:51 Unidentified female (“The Lion Sleeps Tonight”)14:15 Dan/Webster (“How Sweet It Is [To Be Loved By You]” — dedication to wife, Karen)14:35 Unidentified female (“Carrie-Anne”)14:56 Unidentified male (“Incense And Peppermints” — dedication to wife, Mary)15:18 Unidentified female (“Band Of Gold”)15:33 Cassette tape ran out :-(16:12 Unidentified female (“Puff The Magic Dragon”)16:39 Gary (“Unchained Melody” — dedication to Christine)17:06 Unidentified female (“Who’s Makin’ Love”)17:39 Liz (“Cherish” — dedication to Pete)18:13 Unidentified female (“Let’s Get It On”)18:30 Sarah/Rochester (“Venus” — dedication to Ryan)19:34 Unidentified female (“Mama Told Me [Not To Come]”)20:15 Lisa (“Respect” — dedication to her dad on his birthday)All content (radio aircheck, audio podcast – all components, and show notes): © Michael J.
