The Kākāpō Population hits 325! w/ Neve Duxfield : 8 September, 2026

from 95bFM

The Department of Conservation has recently announced that 90 new Kākāpō chicks have been hatched in the last breeding season bringing the total number of Kākāpō to a record of 325, a major achievement considering the species is critically endangered and only had 51 individuals three decades ago.  This week for Green World, producer Liam spoke with Kaiāwhina Taonga ranger Neve Duxfield, about what the Kākāpō recovery programme looks like day-to-day and what this significant milestone means for Kākāpō.
