Originally Aired: February 9, 1938The Lone Ranger #786, "The Kansas Kid And The Stagecoach Murders,"Ben Sortell, district superintendent of the stage line between Pine River and Calhoun, faces a deadly mystery. Twice in the past month, stages have arrived in town with both driver and guard dead, the mail rifled through by unknown killers. While Sortell discusses the baffling murders with Sheriff Jack Beardsley, a scrawny young man calling himself the Kansas Kid appears at the office. Peter Barrett, as he's really known, insists he's eighteen and can handle a six-horse team, desperately begging for work as a stage driver. Despite his obvious youth and frail appearance, the kid refuses to take no for an answer, claiming he'll bring the horses through alive where bigger, more experienced men have failed.Sheriff Beardsley grows suspicious when the Kansas Kid accepts a menial job sweeping the office after being denied a driver's position. Watching through the window, Beardsley and Sortell catch the boy rifling through the desk, studying the stage schedules. Before they can confront him, a masked man appears with guns drawn, also demanding information about the stage routes, plunging the investigation into deeper intrigue.
