In the autumn of 2021, I housesat for a couple I barely knew at 7 Spruce Lane, a narrow house on a dead-end street in Millbrook. The key was in the kitchen drawer, just where they said it would be. But the furniture was all wrong — the couch faced the wrong wall, the photographs on the mantel showed my face alongside strangers. By the second night, I found a locked door in the upstairs hallway that wasn't on the floor plan. The key didn't open it. Nothing did. And from behind that door, every night at 2:47 AM, I heard the sound of someone turning a key in a lock, over and over, like they were trying to get out. Or in.
