Hell feels offensive because it confronts ordinary people with judgement and gives present choices eternal weight. Jesus describes it as irreversible separation from God's favour, the source of life, joy and love. Life centred on self already moves in that direction. Yet Jesus endured forsakenness and darkness on the cross to rescue sinners, since no one can overcome sin through better actions.
