It’s a compelling read, looking into the untapped reserves of precious metals which, unfortunately, are waiting to be plundered beneath the Amazon Rainforest. The focus of the article is, if we want to build our renewable energy future and move away from fossil fuels, we will need these precious metals. However, at what cost? The World Bank estimates we will need three billion tons of critical strategic minerals by 2050 to feed global demand, and currently, Brazil is not even a major player in this sector. Will that change? And if it does, what does it mean for the Amazon Rainforest and the Indigenous communities that rely on its bounty? What does it mean for the world? However, an interesting part of the article discusses the mining companies and investors understanding that they must work to ensure nature and indigenous groups thrive, while also mining for these metals. Is it greenwashing? Or can we put cynicism aside and see we are finally turning a corner?
