This episode of the Korea Now podcast features an interview that Jed Lea-Henry conducted with Daniel Pieper. They speak about the Korean script 'Hangul', its history and development, the terminology and influences from Japan and China, the way in which language became a symbol of national pride and civilizational enlightenment, the structure of Hangul, the power inherent within the use of language and its impact on thought, the way that the Japanese colonial period and the repression of the time helped to turn Hangul into a symbol of national identity, the nationalistic education that evolved to support the language, and how Hangul has survived and changed since 1945. Daniel Pieper is a Lecturer at University College at Washington University in St. Louis. He received his PhD in Asian Studies from the University of British Columbia. His current research focuses on the emergence of vernacular Korean as a discrete subject in the modern school, the textual differentiation process of cosmopolitan Hanmun and vernacular Korean, and the role of language ideology in directing language standardization in pre-colonial and colonial-era Korea.
