The Land Question in South Africa

from African Dialogue · host Channel Africa

Parliament’s Committee on Constitutional Review is moving around the country in a quest to get public opinion on the amendments of the constitution’s section 25 known as the “property clause”. An Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) motion was successfully passed with the ANC’s backing and a parliamentary process is now under way to consider a review of Section 25 of the Constitution. Although the Constitution already allows for land expropriation without compensation on the basis that it is “just and equitable”, if there is a change, it will be the first time an amendment has been made to the Bill of Rights. To help us unpack the debate: 1. Vincent Smith who is the Co-Chair of the Constitutional Review Committee 2. Nompumelelo Seme Attorney & Lecturer: Property Law Wits School of Law3. Barend Uys Deputy CEO Community Affairs Afri-Forum 4. Zanele Lwana, Deputy President of Black First Land First
