She threatens to sue the insurance company and have her attorneys force a settlement. However, Johnny presents damaging evidence: an autopsy performed after Lansing collapsed on a public street reveals health conditions that would have made it impossible for him to pass the insurance physical examination two years earlier. Johnny accuses Mrs. Kennedy of fraud, suggesting someone else took the physical exam in her brother's place.Despite Mrs. Kennedy's fury and her demand that Johnny leave her property, he has laid out the facts and made clear the insurance company won't be intimidated by legal threats. Johnny later discusses strategy with Jim Carter over lunch, learning more about Mrs. Kennedy's financial situation. A widow with substantial debts and minimal income, she clearly needs the insurance money. Johnny predicts that rather than calling her lawyer, Mrs. Kennedy will contact Hillary Franks, the insurance agent who sold the policy, which will draw Franks directly into Johnny's investigation.
