The Last Call at the Lovett Motel

It's late October 1997, and I'm sitting in the parking lot of the Lovett Motel on Route 9, just outside of Hadley, Ohio. The neon sign flickers — VACANCY, then V CANCY, then nothing. The manager, a man named Earl, tells me about the room they never rent out. Room 14. He says it's because the lock is broken. But that's not the real reason. The real reason is what happens when someone stays there anyway. He tells me about a trucker named Dale who checked in three years ago, about the phone calls he got in the middle of the night, about the voice on the other end that sounded exactly like his own. And then he tells me about the morning they found him in the parking lot, holding a phone that wasn't connected to anything, still saying 'hello' into a dead line. I didn't believe him. So I rented Room 14. I just wanted to see for myself. What I heard that night — what I heard coming through the receiver of a phone that had been disconnected for years — I still can't explain.
