The Last Chronicle of Barset Chapter XLIII - Mr Crosbie Goes into the City

In which Mr. Crosbie, finding himself pressed by tight money conditions and mounting debts, seeks the renewal of a bill from the unyielding moneylender Dobbs Broughton and his associates in the rough confines of Hook Court, only to meet refusal and despair. Struggling against humiliation and shrinking credit, he resolves to appeal to an uneasy acquaintance for aid, mindful of the peril that dishonour on the bill would bring upon his reputation and prospects.
