The Romanov dynasty ruled Russia for 300 years. But In March 1917, revolution broke out on the streets of St. Petersburg and Tsar Nicholas II was forced to abdicate his throne. The Royal family was at first placed under house arrest.  The Bolsheviks, fearing the Tsar supporters may try to reinstall the monarchy, sentenced the Royal family to death.
