September is Hispanic Heritage Month and throughout the month we’ll be spotlighting the contributions Avenue musicians have made to Latin Music. On this week’s show we’ll share music from saxophonist Claude Bartee and trombonist Slide Hampton. Bartee grew up in Indianapolis. He graduated from Crispus Attucks High School during the early 1950s and played on the school’s legendary basketball team. Bartee relocated to New York in the 1960s, where he became a member of the legendary Latin jazz band Pucho and the Latin Soul Brothers. Slide Hampton is an icon of the Avenue music scene, and one of the most significant trombonists in jazz history. Throughout his career, Hampton incorporated Latin music into his compositions and arrangements.
