Its origins can be traced back to the 19th century, specifically to a character in blackface minstrel shows named Jim Crow. This character, popularized by performer Thomas Dartmouth “Daddy” Rice in the 1830s, was emblematic of the derogatory stereotypes imposed on African Americans. The character was often depicted in a manner that reinforced racial stereotypes, contributing to a culture of racial discrimination.  The implementation of Jim Crow laws in the United States was characterized by a systematic approach to disenfranchisement and segregation that significantly affected the daily lives of Black Americans. A cornerstone of this oppression was the introduction of various legislative measures designed to suppress voting rights among African Americans. Poll taxes, literacy tests, and other discriminatory practices were established as barriers to participation in the electoral process. Poll taxes required individuals to pay a fee before they could vote, disproportionately affecting those with limited financial means, particularly Black citizens. Furthermore, literacy tests were often administered with racial bias, where white voters could easily pass while Black voters faced impossible challenges.
