Known as the first queen in Indian history to successfully wage war against the British, Rani Velu Nachyar's story is one of bravery, resilience, and leadership.Born in 1730 AD to the royal family of Ramnath kingdom, Rani Velu Nachyar was trained in weapons, martial arts, and strategic warfare from a young age. She was proficient in archery, horse riding, and stick fighting. Additionally, she learned several languages and acquired skills in statesmanship.After marrying the king of Shivagangai and having a daughter, tragedy struck when her husband was killed in battle by the invading British army. This event led Rani Velu Nachyar to flee with her daughter and seek refuge in the kingdom of Virupachi, where she raised a powerful army.Under her leadership, Rani Velu Nachyar's army marched against the British, winning multiple battles and even overcoming the enemy's ammunition depot with the help of a brave warrior named Kuili. In 1780, she emerged victorious once again, regaining her kingdom and ruling effectively for the next decade.Eventually, she handed over the administration of the kingdom to the Marudu Brothers, Chinnamarudu and Velay Marudu, who served as her minister and commander in chief, respectively. Sadly, the brothers were executed in 1801. Rani Velu Nachyar passed away in December 1796, leaving behind a legacy of courage and leadership.Her incredible story continues to inspire, and in 2008, the government of India honored Rani Velu Nachyar's memory with a postal stamp.
