Leaves just beginning to turn along Waterloo Road, and a quiet morning at Merrion Square interrupted by a housekeeper holding a folded paper a little too tightly. A diamond crescent has disappeared from a widow's dressing table, and the new parlourmaid — nineteen, three weeks out of work before she found the place — was alone in the bedroom on Friday afternoon. She was engaged on the strength of a glowing character reference. It praises her honesty, her discretion and her careful handling of valuables. It is written in a very good imitation of Anne Foster's handwriting — and Anne Foster has never met her. This time the case is Anne's from the first morning. Captain Arthur arrives a little later, and discovers that the most useful thing he can do is follow her lead — and fetch the sandwiches. The Letter Anne Never Wrote is an original Golden Age-style mystery about reputations: the ones we borrow, the ones we lend, and the ones a household can take away without ever calling the police. ℹ️ FOR LISTENERS An original mystery written by Nocturnal Tales, inspired by the spirit of the great Golden Age crime writers. Plot, characters and text are entirely our own; all characters and events are fictional. No affiliation is implied. 💬 QUESTION FOR THE COMMENTS A forged reference, a missing brooch, and a new maid who was alone upstairs for five minutes.
