Dreaming is ridiculous. We know more about the deepest parts of the ocean than we do about the landscapes we visit every night. More about extinct DNA. More about Martian dust storms. And yet, everyone dreams. For decades, dreams were dismissed as meaningless brain noise. But if that’s true, why does the brain paralyze the body during REM sleep? Why does it burn energy running simulations instead of resting? And why does REM sleep appear in the womb, long before memory or experience exists at all?
