The life and legacy of Dr. Matthew Walker

The Matthew Walker Comprehensive Health Center has been serving North Nashville’s uninsured and underinsured citizens since it opened in 1968. It’s an indispensable health resource for the community, from family medicine and dentistry, to behavioral health and educational programs.  The center is named for Dr. Matthew Walker, an influential Black surgeon. Originally from Louisiana, he came to Nashville for medical school. Although he was an expert surgeon, he saw that basic preventative health measures like brushing teeth and eating healthy food could make a tangible impact on people’s health. He was passionate about community health and educating the next generation of doctors. This this episode, we talk to Dr. Walker's family about who he was and hear about how the health center carries on his legacy. But first, Gov.
