The Life of Florence Nightingale, Vol. 1 by Edward Tyas Cook | Biography Audiobook Part 3

from The Audiobook Vault: Catholic Sacred & Classic Voices from the Past · host The Audiobook Vault: Catholic

Catholic Review: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐An excellent historical biography of Florence Nightingale that goes far beyond the familiar image of the “Lady with the Lamp.” Cook draws extensively on Nightingale’s letters, notes, and writings, portraying her childhood, education, spiritual development, nursing vocation, Crimean War service, and early work as a social and healthcare reformer. From a Catholic perspective, the book is particularly interesting for its treatment of vocation, service to the suffering, self-sacrifice, charity, and Nightingale’s spiritual life. Nightingale was Anglican rather than Catholic, so this should be appreciated as a historical biography rather than Catholic spiritual literature.Audiobook note: Volume 1 covers Nightingale's life from 1820 through 1861 and runs approximately 20 hours 13 minutes in the LibriVox edition, divided into three audio parts.
