The Life of Venerable Samuel Mazzuchelli (The Drew Mariani Show)

from The Best of the Week · host Relevant Radio

Image of St. Augustine Church built by Fr. Samuel Mazzuchelli in Wisconsin On The Drew Mariani Show, Drew sits down with friend and fellow pilgrim Linda Schoemann to spotlight a little-known but extraordinary figure in American Catholic history: Venerable Samuel Mazzuchelli. Many believe this humble frontier priest is destined for canonization. A Missionary from Milan Venerable Mazzuchelli was born in Italy and joined the Dominican Order at just 17, against his father’s wishes. He left behind the comforts of Milan and crossed the ocean to serve as a missionary priest in the rugged lands of the Midwest. His “parish” stretched across what would become Wisconsin, Iowa, Michigan, and Illinois – more than 50,000 square miles. With no trains or planes, he traveled by foot, horseback, and snowshoes, braving bitter winters to bring Christ to settlers and Native American tribes alike. Building a Catholic Foundation Far from being a quiet missionary, Mazzuchelli was known as a builder. He established more than 30 parishes, constructed 20 churches, and helped form communities that still stand today. He baptized, preached, heard confessions, and visited the sick and dying – often at great personal cost. He also founded the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa, who continue his legacy of education and evangelization. Mystical Encounters Linda and Drew share some of the remarkable stories tied to this priest’s life. Venerable Mazzuchelli reported visions of the Blessed Virgin Mary in his rectory at Benton, Wisconsin. He also told of a mysterious visitor who gave him wise counsel and then vanished without a trace – an encounter he believed to be with St. Joseph himself. The Hidden Penance When Venerable Mazzuchelli died at age 57 after contracting pneumonia while ministering to a sick parishioner, those who prepared his body made a startling discovery: a penance chain, worn so tightly and so long that it had embedded itself into his flesh. Hidden beneath his clothes, it revealed a man who not only endured suffering but embraced it as an offering to God. Today, that chain is preserved by the Dominican Sisters at Sinsinawa and remains a focus of prayer for those seeking healing through his intercession. The Path to Sainthood Mazzuchelli has been declared Venerable, the second step on the road to sainthood. For him to be beatified, the Church requires a miracle attributed solely to his intercession. Linda explains that many favors and healings have already been reported, and thousands of such testimonies are being carefully documented. Pilgrims still visit his tomb in Benton, Wisconsin, and the heritage sites connected to his ministry. Why He Matters Today Drew has a personal invitation: if you need a miracle, ask for the prayers of Venerable Samuel Mazzuchelli. Just as this priest gave his life to bring Christ into the wilderness, he continues to intercede for souls today. Your prayer may even be the miracle that moves him closer to canonization.
