The Life That Belongs To You. The Author speaks.
from Inside The Consulting Room - Understanding the Child Behind the Behaviour · host Kim Lee
Send us Fan MailHarmful relationships rarely announce themselves with a single, obvious moment. Sometimes the damage is quieter: the steady drip of adjustments you make to keep the peace, the slow loss of confidence in your own judgment, the feeling that someone else’s moods and needs have more authority than your reality. I’m Kim Lee, a child and adolescent psychotherapist, and I’m also newly an author, which still feels strange to say out loud. I share why writing this book took more than expertise, it took translating lived experience into words that can actually help. We talk about relational abuse and psychological abuse as patterns, not just events. I unpack why humans adapt so well to difficult circumstances, and how that same strength can hide coercive control, emotional manipulation, and chronic fear until you finally get enough distance to see the shape of what happened. I also explain attunement in psychotherapy: the deep, careful listening that helps a clinician sense a client’s internal world, sometimes so vividly it becomes visual, while still remembering it is the client’s story to hold. The part that stays with me most is what these dynamics do to children. Kids do not need to be the direct target of abusive behavior to be affected. They live inside the emotional weather of a home and learn to become watchful, accommodating, or protective, often carrying responsibility that never belonged to them. If you care about family dynamics, trauma recovery, and the real signs of a harmful relationship, you will find language here that helps you name what has been hard to name. If this resonates, listen all the way through, then subscribe, share the episode with someone who might need it, and leave a review so more people can find these conversations.
