The Lifter of My Head

David flees Jerusalem with his own son leading the rebellion, his own sin standing behind the crisis, and many voices saying, "There is no salvation for him in God." He answers with none of his record and all of his God: a shield about him, his glory, and the lifter of a head that shame had covered, the LORD who answers from the very hill the usurper occupies. So he sleeps in the siege because his Keeper does not, and wakes to pray with confidence, since deliverance was never his to earn and therefore was never his to forfeit. The psalm's last word breaks the taunt with its own vocabulary, and it is proved forever in the greater Son of David who crossed the same Kidron, bore the accusation we deserved, and bowed His head so that ours could be lifted: salvation belongs to the LORD.
