The Living Ark Enters Her Rest
from St Peters Orthodox Church · host St. Peter Orthodox Church
On the Feast of the Dormition, the Church celebrates the beautiful repose of the Theotokos and her entrance, body and soul, into the heavenly sanctuary. Her death and glorification reveal the beauty and hope of the general resurrection: the Mother of God follows her Son through death into transfigured life. Drawing upon the Old Testament Ark of the Covenant, the Psalms, and the Fathers, the homily presents Mary as the true and living Ark who bore within herself Christ—the fulfillment of the Law, the eternal High Priest, and the Bread of Life. Just as King David brought the Ark into Jerusalem, Christ, the New David, receives His Mother into the heavenly Jerusalem, escorted not by oxen but by the hosts of angels. The Dormition therefore calls the faithful not merely to explain or categorize a doctrine, but to behold and celebrate the beauty of what Christ has accomplished in His Mother and what, through the resurrection, He promises to accomplish in all who belong to Him.
