The Lord of Human History (Luke 13:31-35)
from The Wisdom Journey
Share a commentThe people crowned by culture rarely stay famous for long and sometimes the wrong person gets the applause. We start there, then move straight into Luke 13 where Jesus receives a chilling message: Herod Antipas wants him dead. Herod looks like the “man of the year” type, a ruler with soldiers, status, and leverage, but we keep coming back to one steady reality: heaven rules, and God’s plans outlast every throne. From that moment, we pull out three grounded principles for everyday Christian living. First, faithful service does not erase enemies; if you openly follow Jesus Christ, resistance should not shock you. Second, opposition must not detour your calling or soften your message. Jesus calls Herod “that fox,” then keeps healing, delivering, and showing mercy on God’s timetable. We slow down on Psalm 31:15, “My times are in your hand,” and talk about what it means to live like your life is under God’s supervision even when circumstances feel loud. Finally, we face the hardest part: compassion under rejection. Jesus laments over Jerusalem with grief, not mockery, while still telling the truth about consequences and hope, including the future restoration promised in Romans 11. A sobering story about Stalin’s final moments drives home how urgent a response to God can be. If you want biblical encouragement, spiritual resilience, and a clearer view of God’s sovereignty, press play.
