In the late sixteenth century, an English settlement was established on Roanoke Island, off the coast of what is now North Carolina.Then, seemingly overnight, its inhabitants disappeared.When Governor John White returned in 1590 after being forced away for several years, he found the settlement abandoned. There were no bodies, no obvious signs of battle, and almost none of the clues he expected.There was, however, one word.“Croatoan.”Carved into a post, it became the most famous clue in one of history's greatest mysteries.Did the colonists join a nearby Indigenous community? Were they forced to relocate? Did disease, famine, conflict, or the harsh environment destroy the settlement?
