The Love and Death of Joaquin Murieta

Originally Aired: February 16, 1953 Suspense #500, "The Love and Death of Joaquin Murieta," presents the tragic true story of how a peaceful Mexican grandee's son transforms into California's most notorious outlaw. Joaquin Murieta and his wife Carmen arrive in the California goldfields seeking prosperity, but instead encounter lawless Americans who view them as a conquered people without rights. When claim-jumpers led by a man named O'Brien brutally assault Joaquin and murder Carmen with a knife, Joaquin's grief and rage consume him. With his tears exhausted, he swears to avenge her death. That same night, driven by vengeance and a mind partly shattered by loss, Joaquin encounters a rider in the moonlight whom he mistakes for O'Brien and kills. Though his victim proves to be the wrong man, Joaquin embraces his new identity as a killer. He gathers around him other wronged men—Manuel Garcia, whose brother was horsewhipped and hanged, young Luis Garrett whose parents were murdered for their claim, and others carrying similar hatred in their hearts. Together they pledge to exact revenge for the wrongs done to their people, beginning Joaquin's legendary and violent career as an outlaw.
